The Season of Lent

As we begin this traditional penitential season, to prepare us for the glories of Easter, here are some guidelines to keep in mind.

  • Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are both days of fast and abstinence.

  • All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence.

  • Abstinence refers to the eating of meat. It does not include egg or milk products, meat stock, soups or gravies.

  • Rules of fasting are as follows:

  • o Only one full meal a day can be taken.

o Two small meals, “sufficient to maintain strength,” are allowed but together, they should not equal another full meal.

o Drinking liquids between meals does not break the fast.

o Those whose work or health would be impaired are excused from fasting and abstaining.

  • The faithful are strongly encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Penance during Lent.

Here are some helpful on-line resources.
